DJO – A Blog is Born

Posted: June 5, 2010 in DJO Newz

Oh my Blog! Michael Thorne and myslef, Pete Swann are pleased to present the official Dayjob Orchestra Blog; a mission to entertain, offend and confuse as many people as possible.

What the hell is DJO?

DJO started as a a progressive rock band in 1991 consisting of:

Drums – Michael Thorne
Guitar – Pete Swann
Bass – Christ Robertson

We did not expect to eventually become better known for our stupid videos, but life is like that – random.

The stupid videos originated at our first jam spot, Giant Screen TV, when Mike came up with the idea to replace dialog using two VCRs. One VCR would record video from the other, while we dubbed in the new audio with a microphone. This was painstaking – we had to re-sync both machines for each attempt at each line & the video quality sucked.

Years later, in September of 2006, Mike uploaded the first computer-edited DJO video to YouTube, called “Condi Rice Freaks Out“. Between two uploads, that video now has  602,000 views. The most popular video so far is “Happy in Paraguay“, with 1,245,123 views, thanks mainly to AOTS (Attack of the Show) who aired it in part one day after we uploaded it. AOTS gave us another plug the following week and even drank apple juice on the show! Another fav by views is “StarTrek Outtakes II“.

How do we do it? Lots of people ask how we sync the words and what software we use. If there was software to put random words in people’s mouths, I’d definitely buy it, but I haven’t seen it yet. We use Sony Vegas – real easy to use audio/video editor. As for how we sync the dialog, here’s the basic method:

1> Choose a short line of dialog or a short part of a line of dialog that you want to replace.
2> Watch the line many times. (without the original audio)
3> Come up with your best match for timing, expression and emphasis.
4> If you are rolling around on the floor laughing, move on to the next line.

Of course this means there will be no continuity between lines, but that never bothered us.

What’s with the apple juice? We’ll never tell.

What style is our music? We call it Sweet Neo-contemporary Post-previous Disco-metal with a side of James Taylor.

Who does the voices? Me & Mike do all of them interchangeably. I have to digitally pitch myself down to do Worf, but Mike can do Worf no prob.

Why are we truthers? Because we’ve done the research.

Why do you use profanity and gratuitous sexual references? Because we are not politically correct and because we consider them more silly than literal. You have been warned.

When’s the next video coming out? In about a week!

What’s the mating call of the Hammerhead Panda? Blaaaaaaarrrrrrggggg!

There are FIVE Fish heads.

Thanks for checking out the DJO Blog!

Hey guys, greetings from Australia. Been following your stuff since you guys started, the music is fantastic (and Mike, you’re a whisker away from Neil Peart’s skill if not on-par). Your videos are comical genius by the way. Keep up the great work!
    P.S.

This isn’t really the first comment, is it? I don’t see any others.

First of all, love the music, love stupid videos. My absolute favorite is CSPAM and thank the gods someone saved it. The newest one kicks ass as well, by the way.

I love that you’ve created a blog and I really appreciate a description of how you do the videos. I’m not going to call you “truthers” because that would make me a “lie-er” and that would create such a vast paradox that it would rip space/time itself and utterly destroy the fabric of the universe. However, if you ever blog about the subject (and I’d be surprised if you didn’t), I’ll happily read it and say my piece, as well. Weigh them out, sorta thing.

Like that? I give you a penny for your thoughts and you give me your two cents. For every hundred people I do that with, I can buy a cheeseburger. For free!

Site bookmarked! You guys rock. Mike – love your chops bro. I’d like to see some vids of you guys rocking out … love your music style. And of course the voice over stuff is da bomb too. Everybody knows I’m freaky about apple juice.

  6. Brady says:

I’m anxious to hear news on an album or even EP release. From what I’ve heard in random videos of yours and stuff like Michael’s “Spur of the Moment” drum cover, you guys sound like an amazing band. The funny videos are nice too though =P My favorite being the first Obama video and the Bush one. Those had me crying.

  7. Homer says:

Am I the first to post or are you screening random Canadian commenters? You guys are hilarious…….and Canadian. Two great tastes that taste great together!

  8. supercheetah says:

Just remember, tomorrow is the day the world will be overrun by Doritos Cool Ranch with mustard sauce on pigs riding bulls stuffed with honey made by bees that sing like jackals trying to impress a Simon Cowell that has just gone scuba diving in a lake of plastic balls.

  9. Very few comedy groups have made me laugh as hard as I do watching your vids. I hope you guys never stop doing it! Oh, by the way, it was me who poo’d on his dad….. Sorry, my bad.

  10. Mark Cotterill says:

    Whoo, first comment!

Been a big fan of youse guys since I found Data Krupa while searching for vids of the man himself. Currently learning drums.

  11. i love this blog. almost instantly! its nice to have a background to the almighty DJO… and your dubs are hilarious… you guys rule for showing how to do it! and your music rocks! there seriously is not one thing to not like about Dayjob Orchestra! APPLE JUICE! FOR HALF PRICE!

  13. Chris says:

  15. Adrienne says:

Love you guys, your music, and your hilariously random vids. 😛

  16. Cory D says:

Awesome stuff, was interested in hearing the background story of the vids.

Any plans for a cross-country apple juice tour with the band?

    • For now we are playing local – in and around the greater Toronto area. If we can arrange a DJO Cross-Country Apple Juice Tour, dayjobs permitting, we’ll do it.

      Cheers!

  17. Adam T says:

Was introduced to “Happy in Paraguay” last week and have been hooked ever since! Best part is I gots some apple juice just this mornin!

  18. OneMinuteGalactica says:

You guys are great. Awesome videos with awesomely stupid, silly lines.

I’ve had a few videos on Attack of the Show, too, but none of my view counts shot up as much as yours. I’d usually attribute this to some kind of government conspiracy, but it’s possible that your videos are just much better. No, wait, it’s a conspiracy.

  19. Jeff says:

Awesome vids!! First vid of urs I ever saw was Star Trek: TNG Outtakes II.. umm.. hard to pick my favorite: if I had to.. somewhere between stuff we found in the dryer and soup kitchen in my pants.. lol.

  20. Parker says:

I downloaded a trial version of Sony Vegas to work with, and I’ll try my hand at a few videos tomorrow, but I had a couple of questions for you; hope this is an appropriate place to ask them.

First, when you’re watching a scene, do you try to keep in mind what the real dialog is in order to better mimic it / to get inspiration, or do you try to forget it (watching with sound off, perhaps) so it doesn’t interfere with your process?

Second, since I’m (hopefully) using the same software you are, in what video format do you pull files into Vegas, and how do you obtain such? Sorry if this is suggested or dictated by the program in question – as I implied, I haven’t started it up yet.

Thanks for doing such hilarious work!

    • Hey Parker,

We usually delete the original audio before we begin, so we are not influenced by that. As far as video format, I convert the Trek DVDs to mpeg, which Vegas 8A Pro seems to like.

      Cheers!

  21. ruizsf says:

I havn’t laughed this much since Eddie Murphy’s Delirious. Sheeet!
And I appreciate your VCR skills, so thanks for all the time and effort you’ve put into these video’s. You all have made this world a better place! Good luck with your music too!
